Burnout doesn’t need a poster. It needs a laugh . . . that’s clinically calibrated
Matthew Sharpe spent years in the therapy room and years on the comedy stage, and found the same truth in both: people change when they finally stop pretending. Humor-based resilience training for teams that carry more than they can say out loud.
For high-stakes teams in healthcare, law enforcement, corrections, and education, he turns the pressure you can’t talk about into the thing the whole room laughs at, then hands you the clinical skills to carry it.
Matt Sharpe has spent over two decades helping people thrive—first in clinical settings, then on stage. He holds two master’s degrees, has taught college psychology, built a successful private practice, and toured as a standup comic. But what sets him apart is his ability to take complex mental health principles and deliver them with clarity, humor, and heart.
He saw a pattern: companies were struggling to support their employees’ mental health. So Matt created a workshop experience that speaks directly to the core issues employees face—stress, conflict, burnout, and low morale—and equips them to bounce back stronger.
His employee resilience workshops are:
Immediate – Real strategies your team can use right away
Interactive – Using tools from comedy and improv
Insightful – Backed by psychology, rooted in practice

Awaken the Jester: Building Resilience Through Humor
(Signature Keynote)
Awaken the Jester is a high‑energy, clinically grounded, comedy‑infused session designed for professionals who work in High-Stakes, High-Stress roles like health care, mental health, law enforcement, corrections, and every frontline role where people carry the weight of other people’s lives.
Drawing on his dual background as a psychotherapist and stand‑up comic, this keynote helps participants reconnect with the deeper “why” behind the work they do, using humor as a tool for psychological flexibility, emotional endurance, and renewed purpose. Through stories, science, and the Jester‑based resilience framework from the book The Jester: Building Resilience Through Humor, attendees learn how to shift perspective, recover faster, and reclaim the heart of the work that only they can do.
Every workplace right now has four generations sharing the same hallway, and most of them are convinced the other three are doing it wrong. Boomers think nobody wants to work. Gen Z thinks nobody wants to live. And somewhere in the middle, a manager is drafting an email about “professional attire” that no one under thirty will read.
Sledding Uphill uses stand-up comedy to name what everyone is already thinking, and then does the harder, funnier work of sorting it all out. Through laughter that lets every generation in the room feel seen instead of scolded, Sledding Uphill helps employers and employees build a shared, practical definition of professionalism, grounded in reliability, respect, and results. Audiences leave with language they can use across generations, and with the relief that comes from discovering the hill is easier to climb when everyone is pulling the same sled.
Own Your Stage: Becoming a Secure-Base Leader
(Management/Leadership audiences)
Today’s workplaces are hungry for leaders who don’t just manage tasks but create environments where teams feel supported and motivated to bring their best. In this session, we’ll pull back the curtain on what it really takes to become the kind of manager people genuinely look up to—using a touch of comic timing, a whole lot of attachment‑theory and stagecraft. Research on secure attachment shows that when managers lead with consistent accountability, emotional steadiness, and genuine connection, teams experience higher trust, lower turnover, and dramatically better collaboration—three ingredients directly linked to stronger performance and healthier profit margins.
When employees respect their managers, they have the bandwidth to think, create, and actually enjoy their work. In this presentation, the hybrid approach of psychotherapy and performance‑based comedy skills becomes a strategic advantage. This combination translates the science of secure attachment into tools people can actually use, delivered with enough humor, presence, and timing that the lessons land without defensiveness

Tackling Tunnel Vision: Using Humor To Break Cognitive Constriction and Improve High-Stakes Decision-Making
(Law Enforcement, Healthcare)
First responders face some of the most challenging, high-stakes decisions in public service -often under intense stress and scrutiny. “Tackling Tunnel Vision” is a workshop designed to strengthen critical thinking and decision-making under pressure. Through real-world scenarios, group activities, and psychological tools, participants will explore how high stress can narrow thinking and limit options, and how to retrain the brain toward clarity, confidence, and better outcomes. This session reinforces the value of a growth mindset, encourages emotional regulation, and offers tools for adaptive problem-solving—all vital for managing change and leading effectively in high-pressure environments.
Diffuse the Fuse: Using Humor to De-Escalate Conflict
(Customer service, management)
Conflict can ignite in a flash—especially in high-stress environments where emotions run hot and patience runs thin. Diffuse the Fuse equips participants with the science and skill of using humor to cool tension, foster connection, and restore collaboration before situations explode.
Grounded in psychological research and sharpened through real-world comedy experience, this session explores how humor—used wisely—can transform defensiveness into dialogue, stress into trust, and frustration into forward motion. Participants will learn how to read the room, regulate their own emotions, and deploy the right kind of humor at the right time to defuse conflict and strengthen rapport.
The Humor Lab
The Humor Lab is a hands-on add-on workshop that turns any of these talks into a live practice session. In a safe, playful, fully interactive space, participants take the concepts they just heard and immediately put them to work by writing and performing their own jokes. Running anywhere from one to three hours depending on your group’s size and schedule, the Lab guides teams through the actual craft of comedy: finding the truth in a shared frustration, shaping it into a joke, and delivering it out loud to a room that’s on their side. The result is more than laughter. Participants practice reading a room, taking a risk in front of peers, recovering when a line doesn’t land, and turning stress into something they can name and joke about together — the same skills that build resilience, emotional intelligence, and trust long after the event ends.

His style is one of the best I’ve seen
Law enforcement is a very tough crowd to teach. We are very guarded and don’t do the classroom setting well. Matt did a phenomenal job of making everyone feel comfortable and receptive. 38 years in law enforcement, and his style is one of the best I’ve seen.
Matt’s teaching method is stellar; he uses humor, real-life examples, comedy, and relatable terms to convey the message he is trying to impart.
As a part of our annual training, we brought Matt in to speak to our administrative team about mental health, both internal and external. Typically, we bring folks in that one of our members has seen or heard, or based on a referral. Matt was neither; we just randomly chose him. Wow, did we hit a home run! I would strongly encourage your business to take advantage of Matt’s talent. You will not be disappointed.
Matt’s presentation was worth more than the money and time. There was not one complaint about him or his material from our staff, and if anyone knows cops and training, that is highly unusual.

Kind and caring with a big personality
I’ve observed that Matt’s unique and gifted approach is rooted in his life experiences with a blend of humor, awareness and insight that benefits those around him. Matt is very skilled in both his ability to listen and his ability to communicate. He is kind and caring with a big personality!
I highly recommend Matt Sharpe for any group, organization, or event looking for a speaker or standup comedian.
We had Matt deliver a keynote presentation and workshop for our annual Iowa Emergency Management Association Conference. It was clear that Matt understood our members and the challenges that we face in our occupation. He delivered a hilarious yet impactful program for us that was much needed and extremely well received. If your group deals with stressful situations regularly, I highly recommend Matt’s presentation and workshop.

Not only funny but thought-provoking too
All of us in HR saw and enjoyed it. Comedy is very subjective. However, I felt he was very healthcare-forward, and it was not only funny but thought-provoking too. His message was on point for our theme of Healing Happens Here. I would highly recommend his presentation to any business, especially healthcare.

Comedy that lives beyond the laugh
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Matt Sharpe on comedy shows at different venues in our local area. His quick, yet thoughtful wit leads to comedy that lives beyond the laugh and the moment to insights that stay with you. Matt Sharpe and I have also produced a show together, and that look under the hood has shown me his attention to detail and care for his comedy clients.
Having known and worked alongside Matt Sharpe for several years, I’m pleased to offer my recommendation for any of the services offered by his organization.

So relatable and kept everyone laughing
Matt’s comedy session was so relatable and kept everyone laughing! He even humored me and wore a special shirt for the event as part of an inside family joke. We are so happy we had him be a part of the entertainment for our special day.

He hit the exact right notes.
Matt’s presentation to our staff was probably the best we’ve had in the 12 years we’ve been in existence. Feedback from a few dozen of our employees over lunch and through the remainder of the day was overwhelmingly positive. They laughed, of course. Equally importantly, they were moved. He hit the exact right notes. And there was genuine admiration and gratitude for the parts he personally shared with us.
